Welcome to Gitane Swing
July 13, 2009
Gitane Swing are a Gypsy Jazz trio comprised of two guitars and a fiddle with a repertoire of twentieth Century Jazz and Blues classics. Including compositions by the likes of Django Reinhardt, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Cole Porter, the music varies from the fast and furious Gypsy style to the deep and melancholic with melodies and exciting improvisations on guitar and fiddle.
The group came together in June 2009 and have compiled an extensive repertoire of well known tunes, standards made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Sinatra and many others.
With bases in Wicklow and Sligo the band have been performing in both locations as well as busking in Dublin and one off performances in number of locations countrywide. Residencies include Sunday afternoons in The Kilpedder Inn (aka Jocks) and Friday nights in La Strada Restaurant in Dun Laoghaire.
The roots of the individual band members vary, combining the virtuosity of classically trained fiddle player Bill Stewart, with the emerging genius of guitarist Henry Egan to the accompaniment of pulsating rythms provided by the guitar of Lorcan Egan.
The band are very happy to be accompanied, supported, and befriended by Stuart Ross, who apart from his many purely musical talents is an engineer of great precision and dedication.
Plans for this ambitious group include an album which will include a number of original compositions. In the next year a European tour is in prospect where the band hope to bring their music to communities from where it originated and to sample additional flavours of those cultures. They can also be seen on www.myspace.com/gitaneswingtrio,
To those who have enjoyed such bands as Hotfoot or the Café Orchestra or who simply enjoy good music this act is one to catch.
